Biography
Dr. Tianyi Wang is the Co-Project Director and Senior Software Developer at the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC), within Florida International University's Extreme Events Institute. With over a decade of research and development experience, Dr. Wang specializes in leveraging data science, machine learning, and deep learning to model complex systems and address real-world challenges in natural disaster management and high-performance computing.
At FIU, Dr. Wang leads key software engineering and data analytics initiatives for the Florida Public Loss Models (FPLM)—a flagship multi-disciplinary catastrophe modeling framework funded by the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation that estimates property losses across the state. In this capacity, he manages the software certification processes for the state-certified Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model (FPHLM), Florida Public Flood Loss Model (FPFLM) and leads the development of the cutting-edge Severe Convective Storm (SCS) model to simulate risks from tornadoes, hail, and extreme winds.
Dr. Wang earned his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from University of Missouri-Kansas City and Master’s degree in computer science from Florida International University, following a strong foundational background in quantitative analysis. His multidisciplinary approach bridges the gap between sophisticated deep learning frameworks—such as spatio-temporal graph neural networks and multimodal fusion models—and practical engineering applications in risk assessment, civil infrastructure protection, and AI-driven educational technology.
